Serena at US Open, LIV Golf, NCAA Football Leads Sports Weekend Schedule

Miami, Sept 2 (UPI) – Serena Williams’ final round at the US Open, another LIV golf tournament and a whole host of college football matches will be some of the major sporting events to be broadcast this weekend.

Matches between the WNBA playoffs, MLB regular seasons, and football will also be broadcast Friday through Sunday.

The NASCAR Cup Series qualifiers and the Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix will also take place on Sunday in Darlington, South Carolina and the Netherlands, respectively.

But Serena Williams’ run in Flushing, New York, and dozens of college football games will probably draw the most viewers.

US Open

Dozens of the third-round and 16th round matches of the US Open will be broadcast Friday through Sunday from the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center at USTA.

Coverage of Round Three will begin Friday at 11 AM ET on ESPN Deportes and continue at noon on ESPN. Coverage will be rerun at 6 p.m. on ESPN2.

Additional Round Three matches will air starting at 11 a.m. Saturday on ESPN2 and at 11:15 a.m. on ESPN Deportes. Coverage will resume at 7 p.m. on ESPN2.

The first wave of Round of 16 matches will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday on ESPN and continue at noon on ESPN Deportes. Coverage of late matches will begin at 7 p.m. on ESPN2.

Williams, who overturned No. 2 Annette Kontaveit of Estonia in the second round. The 23-times Grand Slam champion will face Australian Agla Tomljanovic for a place in the quarter-finals. That match is expected to begin at 7 p.m. Friday on ESPN2.

No. 12 Corey “Coco” Gauff and No. 20 Madison Keys are scheduled to meet in an All-American game earlier Friday in the third round. Swiss fifth seed Anas Jabeur and defending champion Bianca Andreescu are among the top women who will compete on Friday at the US Open.

Polish 1st seed Iga Swiatek and 8th seed Jessica Pegola of the United States will take to court on Saturday in their third-round matches.

Top seed Daniil Medvedev of Russia, Norway 5th seed Casper Ruud and 12th seed Pablo Carreno will be among the top men on the court on Friday at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Live golf

LIV Golf Boston, the fourth championship of the inaugural LIV Golf Invitational Series, runs Friday through Sunday at The International Golf Club in Bolton, Massachusetts.

Tournament coverage of the three-round tournament will begin at 2PM ET Friday, Saturday and Sunday and will be broadcast on DAZN, YouTube, Facebook and LIVGolf.com.

Cameron Smith, the number 2 player in the official world golf rankings, will make his LIV Golf debut. He is the best golfer in the field of 48 players.

No. 19 Joaquin Neiman, No. 22 Dustin Johnson, No. 17 Abraham Anser, No. 26 Brooks Kupka, No. 31 Louis Oustoizen, No. 33 Paul Casey, No. 34 Kevin Na, No. 37 Bryson DeChambeau, No. 38 Jason Kokrac, No. 45 Taylor Goose, No. 46 Harold Varner III and No. 50 Patrick Reed are among the other 50 best players in the field.

Smith, Johnson, Neiman, Goch, Oosthuizen, Casey Reed and DeChambeau are among the nominees for the title and first place prize of $4 million.

The Saudi-funded and controversial PGA Tour series with LIV Golf Chicago will run from September 16-18 in Sugar Grove, Illinois. The 2022 edition of the series will end October 27-30 at Trump National. Doral in Miami.

college football

The college football season began last week, but most teams will begin their campaigns this weekend. More than 100 teams play on Saturday while four more teams play on Sunday.

Michigan State, the 14th team in the coaches poll, will be the first ranked team to play this weekend. The Spartans will host western Michigan at 7 p.m. Friday on ESPN.

Indiana will host Illinois at 8 p.m. FS1. Colorado will fight the TCU at 10 p.m. on ESPN.

Saturday’s schedule will include eight matches at noon. 7th seed Texas A&M will face Sam Houston in one of those games on the SEC Network. #6 Michigan State will host Colorado on ABC. Number 13 North Carolina State will face East Carolina on ESPN.

#22 Cincinnati and #23 Arkansas will meet at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN. Twelfth-placed Oregon will face No. 3 ranked Georgia at the same time on ABC.

#17 Miami plays Bethune-Cookman at 3:30 p.m. on ACC. No. 9 ranked Oklahoma will face UTEP at the same time on Fox.

8 Utah will battle Florida at 7 p.m. on ESPN. Alabama No. 1 will face Utah at 7:30 p.m. on the SEC Network. One of the best matches this weekend will feature No. 5 Notre Dame and No. 2 Ohio State. That match will air at 7:30 p.m. on ABC.
