FAYETTEVILLE – Arkansas’ wide receivers looked good in pre-season, but so far Sam Pittman is hoping to get a few in that group to advance.
The Oklahoma transfer leads Jadon Haselwood for the Razorbacks with eight catches for 72 yards and one touchdown. Matt Landers is next with seven for 88 yards while Warren Thompson has five receptions for 58 yards and touchdowns. Ketron Jackson and Malik Hornsby each got one pass.
A pair of novices and three real new students are broad receivers Bateman hopes to engage in the scrolling game. The long-awaited student is Bryce Stevens and Jadon Wilson. The real new students are Isaiah Sategna, Quincey McAdoo, and Sam Mbake.
Pittman said about the opportunity to further break the spin. “You said it before you knew how I like this group. Of course, I prepared the four guys who played a little bit. But you have Wilson, Stevens, and McAdoo. I really like McAdoo. Mbake is coming, and he’s going to play more special teams. Sategna, I love him so much. We have big plans. him. He rolled his ankle yesterday. I don’t know exactly where he’s going to be in that. These guys are good players, but we haven’t faced the situations right yet.
“Even Ketron Jackson, who I think is a really good player, we don’t really get from the cast that I’d like. Those are good problems sometimes. To answer your question, I’m really ahead of McAdoo, Sategna and Mbake. They are all really good players, And of course we have other players in Stevens and Wilson who don’t play as well as I like. I wouldn’t have any problem putting them in the game, but the situation hasn’t been quite there yet where we’ve been able to do that.”
The Landers came from Toledo where in 2021 he had 20 passes for 514 yards and five touchdowns in 12 games. Prior to that, Landers played 25 games in Georgia with one start.
“He’s a very quiet person and works like a character,” Bateman said. “Mature man. I didn’t know him very well, obviously not his position coach when I was in Georgia. But I knew he was fast and that he was a good person. But our relationship has grown since he was here. He obviously had more time to visit and talk to him and I tried to help him and he was happy to have him in the team.”
Haselwood came from Oklahoma where he led the Sooners with 39 receptions and six touchdowns. The catch went 399 yards. Pittman said that Haselwood has fun with the pigs.
“I think yeah, I think he’s having a good time,” Bateman said. He’s a physical kid. He’s a man. He’s a grown kid. He’s not afraid to give his opinion, it helps the soccer team. He’s not afraid to lead. He brings a lot of confidence to the offensive soccer team. He just does. He brings in a lot of confidence. He doesn’t fall. Never. I love everything about him. I think he’s strong and physical, a good player. I hope he’s having fun because I’m enjoying because he’s in the team.”
