Pep Guardiola expects more from prolific Erling Haaland.
Haaland made an amazing start to his career with Manchester City, scoring 13 goals in his first nine matches for the Premier League champions.
The in-form Norwegian’s late win over Borussia Dortmund in the middle of the week has led Guardiola to compare him to Johan Crieff and the City manager believes his quality will only improve.
Guardiola said: “He is an exceptional striker, I have said it many times. But at this age, I think he has ambition, he wants to be better, and I think he will be better.”
Haaland scored 86 goals in 89 games with Dortmund and continued in City, where he stopped in Germany.
Guardiola said: “He is an ideal person for management. He is a nice guy and that is the most important thing.
“The quality he had before coming here, he kept doing what he did. We didn’t add many things.”
Haaland was named the Premier League Player of the Month for August
Manchester City striker Haaland was named the Premier League Player of the Month for August after scoring nine goals in five matches in a brilliant start to his career in England.
The 22-year-old netted a double on his debut in the league against West Ham and scored one goal at Newcastle United before netting back-to-back hat-tricks against Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest as City won four of their first five games.
The Norwegian beat Arsenal duo Gabriel Jesus and Martin Odegaard as well as Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic among others to win the award.
According to Obta, only former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez scored more goals in a single month in the Premier League, with 10 goals in December 2013.
“I am delighted to win this award for the first time,” Haaland said. “It was a great start to the season for the team and I am grateful to everyone who voted.
“We all wanted to be successful this season, so winning four out of five matches was a great start for us in the most challenging competition in the world.
“I am happy that I played my part by scoring goals. I hope to continue to support the team… and continue our strong start to the season.”
Erling Haaland would finish the season with 102 goals in all club competitions if he maintained his rate and match time and reached all finals – but how does the Norwegian achieve his record earnings?
Could Haaland break the record for the Golden Boot in the Premier League, which amounted to 32 goals in 38 games scored by Mohamed Salah in 2018? How did Haaland score his goals and did he score more than expected? Did City adjust their style to suit Haaland?
Can the wolves stop Haaland?
Haaland has fooled anyone who dared question whether he would need time to settle in the Premier League, with an amazing start to the season.
The Norwegian striker has scored 10 goals in his six matches and will be looking to add to his tally against Wolverhampton on Saturday. Bournemouth is the only one who failed to prevent Haaland from scoring in the league this season, so Wolves’ work will stop.
Although Bruno Lage’s men have conceded fewer goals than any other team in the league so far – four – their strength will be severely tested by this City side, who have already scored 20 goals.
