McNeese looks to turn the page against Mississippi College

Lake Charles, Los Angeles (KPLC) – It’s been a rough start to the 2022 McNeese Cowboys football season as they’re 0-3 on the year with losses to Montana State, Rice, and Alcorn State, but this week the McNeese got a chance to turn things around as they welcome a squad Mississippi College Choctaws at Cowboy Stadium on Saturday night.

Last Saturday, in the McNeese’s first home game of the 2022 season, and their first home night game in more than two years, the Cowboys fell to the Alcorn State Braves 30-19, after struggling all night, continuing to punish them. As they had eight penalties that cost them 90 yards combined. However, despite the problems, coach Gary Goff still sees some positives in the loss, but he also knows they have a lot to work on.

“You know, we weren’t on Saturday, obviously we didn’t play well, but you know it was like we were constantly behind the eight ball, we didn’t have some things going our way early, you know that opening drive our defense did a good job. Because you know he stopped, and then we got a 32-yard dash, our first game play of a penalty, and you followed that trend all night long,” coach Gauff said Thursday about the Cowboys penalty issue.

In their first two Cowboys games against Montana State and Rice, they only had seven penalties combined, but against Alcorn State last week, they couldn’t stay out of their own way, which was part of the reason they weren’t. They can’t get their first win of the season. Speaking of their first win of the season, the Cowboys keep the focus on themselves as they keep trying and get into the winning column.

“I keep them focused on us, and again I mean there’s no disrespect, but whether we’re playing for the first team in the state or you know, Mississippi College, it doesn’t matter, we know what we’re doing business, we’ve done that for years and years and years, Let’s not treat these kids any differently, let’s keep training these kids hard, love them more, and there’ll be light at the end of the tunnel, Coach Goff said, “You know I want to get there now, but it’s a process.”

When it comes to getting his first win of the 2022 season, which would also be Gauff’s first with the Cowboys, Gauff isn’t worried about doing it to himself, because he says it’s not about him that “I could care less about my first win, And most importantly I care about these guys, the seniors who are having a good season, that’s what it’s all about, so you know, it’s their team, yeah I’m a big part of it because obviously I’m a head coach, but it’s about them not me. Myself in the mirror every day, you know if I’m talking to these kids about toughness, behavior, and discipline, I have to take my own medication, I have to be tough, I’ve got to have a great attitude, and I have to be disciplined in what we believe in.

Gauff and the Cowboys will be looking for their first win of the 2022 season on Saturday, when they welcome the Mississippi College Choctaws to Cowboy Stadium, at 7:00.
