Kylian Mbappe refuses to participate in the next photo session for the French national team

Kylian Mbappe refuses to participate in the upcoming photo session for the French national team because he wants more control over his image rights … with the PSG star frustrated with the team’s sponsors and ‘uncomfortable’ representing brands such as Betclic and KFC

  • Kylian Mbappe refused to participate in a photo session for the French national team on Tuesday
  • He made this decision because he is not happy with representing some brands
  • The team is sponsored by major brands including Betclic and KFC
  • Mbappe does not feel comfortable being associated with bookmakers and fast food brands
  • He wants to renegotiate his image rights with the French Football Federation

Kylian Mbappe reportedly refused to participate in the France national team photo session on Tuesday as his long-running dispute with the French Football Federation (FFF) over image rights continued.

Mbappe led a boycott of the French team for certain sponsors in March because he did not want to be associated with certain brands.

He has now opted not to take part in a scheduled photo session with the team because he remains uncomfortable promoting certain sponsors including bookmakers and fast food brands, Get French Football News reported.

The French Football Federation struck an €8m (£7m) deal with online sports betting company Betclic last year, and that contract runs until the 2026 World Cup.

The confederation has ties to Kentucky Fried Chicken, Uber Eats and Coca-Cola, which may be of concern to Mbappe.

All the money Mbappe earns from the French sponsorship goes to charity, but the striker is believed to have walked away from the shoot due to the ethical and moral issues that arise from representing some of the sponsors.

Mbappe’s complaints remain understandable given his past problems with bookmakers in the past.

French betting company Winamax has been widely condemned over a tweet they sent earlier this year to a football fan celebrating a goal by showing the audience his owl. Alongside the photo, the caption read: “Kylian Mbappe’s father celebrates his son’s goal against South Africa.”

Mbappe was far from impressed with his ill-advised tweet and responded by writing: “The danger of online betting…no longer has a limit. A little respect please.

It is understood that Mbappe still wants to renegotiate the image rights agreement with the FA for national team players.

It was agreed again in 2010 after the disastrous World Cup for the national team that the image rights would be distributed evenly among the 23 members of each French squad.

However, Mbappe wants more of the team’s revenue to go to popular football.

The FA has refused to budge on its position for the time being, but Mbappe’s refusal to participate in the latest photo session may force them to rethink.
