KNOKKE-HEIST, Belgium / London, UK / Tampa, Florida (September 12, 2022) /Endurance Sportswear / – Iron Man announced a return to Belgium in 2023 with Iron Man® 70.3® Knokke-Heist, Belgium scheduled for September 17, 2023. The opening of Iron Man 70.3 Knokke-Heist, Belgium will see the brand return to Belgium for the first time since 2012 and will see Knokke-Heist’s long-term Zwintriathlon development in a weekend of festive triathlon on stage International.

Weekend activities will start on Saturday 16th September 2023, it will be 5150® Knokke-Heist, the Olympic triathlon is perfect for athletes new to the sport or those who love fast, fun races. On Sunday, triathletes from all over Europe will take on Iron Man 70.3 Knokke-Heist with a 1.9km swim, 90km bike and 21.1km across Belgium’s West Flanders. Both courses will showcase the beaches and green landscapes of the Zwin Nature Reserve with completion on Heist Beach.

“The culture of triathlon is closely woven into the DNA of our municipality,” Knokke-Heist Mayor Piet De Groote said. “Knokke-Heist has successfully hosted many short and medium triathlons over the years, as well as the fun triathlon events of our younger generation, so adding the Ironman 70.3 event to our calendar feels like a natural next step. We are very much looking forward to creating a special and memorable event and look forward to welcoming our athletes to our wonderful town this coming September.”

Athletes competing with the Ironman 70.3 Race Day Swimming Race will begin a 1.9-kilometre swim in the open waters of the North Sea, at Heist Beach. The water temperature in September is usually cool, but pleasant, and the course is protected by a dam that also aids a calm swim. The one-ring cycle will take athletes along the quiet green countryside and the marshes of Ramskapelle, Damme, Oostkerke, Hoeke and Sluis. With flat and fast roads, the course has the best personal potential. Finally, the athletes will run 21.1 kilometers while enjoying the beautiful island of Zeedijk (sea dam) while being cheered on by the residents of Knokke-Heist as they return to the beach to cross the finish line.

“We are very excited to see the return of Iron Man 70.3 in Belgium after an absence of a few years,” Thomas Figi Olsen, managing director of Ironman Group in Europe, Middle East and Africa. “We’ve had our eyes on Knokke-Heist for a while now, thanks to its growing triathlon culture, coastal appeal, and close international travel links. Belgium has a strong triathlon culture and a proud history of producing many Iron Man champions. The most famous are the former Iron Man world champions, Frederic van Lerde and Luke van Lerde as well as Marino Vanhonaker, Bart Ernotts and Ten Dickers who have also taken titles on the European and world stages.”

Knokke-Heist is the greenest municipality on the Belgian coast. More than a quarter of the municipality is made up of recreational parks or untouched woodlands – all of which can be easily reached by bike. Knokke-Heist boasts diverse delicacies, such as L’étage, and is known as a heaven for food lovers. It has many cultural events throughout the year, and a range of first-class shops for shopaholics.

Frederic van Verde, Belgian professional triple player and 2013 Ironman World Champion He commented: “Knokke-Heist, an iconic destination for triathlon in Belgium! A very beautiful setting on the Belgian coast and a track where it’s not the height that makes the difference, but the wind. I won a similar course in 2010 and 2012 and that was the perfect preparation for the World Championships.” For Iron Man in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.”

Ironman 70.3 Knokke-Heist will provide qualifying slots for the 2024 VinFast IRONMAN® 70.3® World Championships to be held from December 14-15, 2024 in Taupo, New Zealand.
