But Ward said, “I will take the blame for that.”
TD was one of two in the final 1:22 that cost Browns their 31-30 loss after going 30-17 with 1:55 remaining.
Davis ran next to Ward on the right, and Grant Delbitt seemed to be the last line of defense. But it’s still somewhat unclear who he was supposed to have who.
“I was playing flat” on Cloud Cover 2’s coverage of that play, Ward said at a Zoom conference on Monday.
In that case, he said, Davis was supposed to get past him while he was in the apartment and that he shouldn’t have evacuated his area to try and salvage the blown coverage. As it were, Tyler Conklin was going a flat road late to occupy Ward.
But Delpit, who appears to be the obvious culprit if not Ward’s coverage, indicated there were two possible coverages of the play. Several times he said “communication error” and when asked for clarification, he said “I will not play the blame game with my teammates.”
Similarly, coach Kevin Stefansky said he wouldn’t separate coverage responsibilities because it’s not constructive. He emphasized communicating and fixing things quickly with the 1-1 Steelers arriving in town Thursday night.
Ward also said he doesn’t think Brown needs to use deep “angel” security the way Greg Williams did when the coordinator was here to avoid recipients standing behind them.
Ward maintained that it was an “easy fix” and that Brown only needed to communicate better on the back end.
He also said that he didn’t speak after the match because no one in his wardrobe had approached him. He said he would have explained his role in the play after the match if he had the opportunity.
He said he spoke on Twitter on Monday morning because he wanted to make things right. When the professional football analyst John Cusco tweeted that Ward gave up over 100 yards For the first time in his career, whether in the NFL or college, Ward replied, “Lol I’ve only been targeted once yesterday. There’s a lot of fake news. People don’t know what they don’t know.”
Brown must quickly correct their mistakes to avoid slipping to 1-2 against the Steelers on Thursday night, and now they must try to correct their mistakes without defensive end Jadvion Clooney (right) and Chase Winovich (hamstring), who were injured opposite. Aircraft are both excluded from the game.
